Lateral flow assay developed by RAPIvD published in Toxicology Letters

A scientific paper featuring a lateral flow assay developed by rapid in vitro diagnostics specialist, RAPIvD Ltd. has been published in Elsevier's 'Toxicology Letters'.

The paper was authored by Dr Lathan Ball and is titled. "The development of rapid immunoassays for the urinary analysis of 1-hydroxypyrene glucuronide facilitate both laboratory and on-site polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon biomonitoring".

The assay uses urine samples to monitor levels of environmental and occupational exposure to carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are produced during the incomplete burning of organic materials and sources include vehicle exhaust and tobacco smoke and waste incineration.

The key to measuring PAHs is HOP-G which is secreted in urine and is formed when the body metabolises a common PAH component, pyrene.

The device and its accompanying app-based reader was initially created to monitor and protect workers in industrial environments. RAPIvD worked alongside Bioventix and Chemitrace to develop the test.

RAPIvD CEO, Dr Rob Porter said. "The HOP-G development project has been very successful and it's always encouraging to be associated with published peer-reviewed papers. The assay plays an important role in reducing the health risks associated with working in proximity to the combustion of organic materials. The fact that it is recognised by the scientific community and appreciated by its users further proves the value and adaptability of lateral flow technology in helping to detect and measure a plethora of matter and substances".
